Tailgate Lock

Not having owned a truck before, there were surprises to encounter.  One of them was that the Tacoma Tailgate is not really secured in any way.  Another surprise was to learn how lightweight the Tailgate is.  It occurred to me that someone wishing to replace a dented Tailgate could easily walk away with a stolen one and according to my online research, it happens far more often than I have ever heard openly discussed.

To the rescue is an Ontario, Canada-based firm called Pop & Lock Corporation (http://popandlock.net) and their line of Pop&Lock products.  For the 05+ Tacoma, the model number is PL5200 and I purchased one from Hub Caps Plus (www.hubscapsplus.com) for $45.49 including shipping.  The product offers an OEM finished look as if the truck was delivered from the factory with the lock already installed.  All the installation parts were supplied and no drilling was required.

The product was much easier to install than I imagined it would be.  It took about 20 minutes tops.  I removed the tailgate and placed it between two saw horses (using towels so as to not to scratch the paint).  I removed the screws that hold the plastic liner in place on the back of the tailgate and followed the easy instructions to install the lock.  (To download a copy of the instructions, click HERE.)

The product works so well and so easy to install that I purchased a second one for my son's truck.  The only wish that I have is that the keys matched the truck keys so that I did not have an extra set to keep track of.
