Roof Rack

I drove my 2007 Tacoma of the Toyota lot with quite of few "TRD" enhancements, but I soon caught the bug to make it truly mine by adding an assortment of additional mods.  Some of the mods I added are known as OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer.  This term typically refers to parts and accessories licensed or authorized by the automaker.

One of the OEM mods available for the Double Cab is the Roof Rack (part number PT278-35050).  The Tacoma OEM Roof Rack is unique in a couple of ways.  First, it is easily installed using existing factory drilled holes in the roof of the Tacoma.  Secondly, the cross bars of the Roof Rack can be stowed (as shown below) to provide minimal wind resistance when the Roof Rack is not in use.  It's unique design requires the full roof line of the Double Cab which is why it will not fit the shorter cabs.

I purchased the Roof Rack from Toyota of Richardson, Texas ($230.41 including shipping).  It arrived to my home a short time later by way of UPS.  Unfortunately it seemed that the parts bag had broken in transit somehow and various screws and other small parts were found outside of the box or missing all together.  I contacted Greg at Toyota of Richardson and he promptly ordered a replacement parts bag and had it expedited to my home.  Once again, it was a refreshing reminder at how well Toyota dealerships have treated us so well all along.

I intended to installation the Roof Rack very slowly to avoid mistakes, but the installation time sped by in spite of myself because it was so easy.  The instructions are downloadable below, but essentially all one must do is to pull off the rubber strips starting from the back of the cab, make sure the existing holes are clean of any residual adhesive from the strips and screw in the new Roof Rack.

I think the Roof Rack looks stylish and helps the truck look "ready" for anything it is called upon to do.  The Roof Rack is clearly designed to be as functional as it is good looking which is why it is manufactured in a rugged plastic material.  I am trying to figure out if there is any practical way to add some chrome appearance to at least come of it in the future.
