Locking Fuel Cap |
|
With fuel prices as high as they are, gasoline haws become a valued asset. The idea to steal gasoline has never been a greater temptation than it is today. Some thieves have become quite creative as well as bold in an effort to drive off with the liquid gold without having paid for it.
I consider a Locking Fuel Cap a smart idea and I had to get one for my '07 Tacoma. But, alas, as with seemingly most decisions I have made in recent days, finding the right Fuel Cap is not as straight forward as one might think. My first search for answers was on the Internet. There I found a great number of forum discussions between Tacoma owners who just could not seem to get solid answers. A common warning is that getting the wrong gas cap can interfere with the performance of modern day fuel tank sensors and cause warning lights to go crazy.
Adding to the mystery are circumstances such as finding a parts reference guide at a Pep Boys Auto store that has not been updated in years. Numbers did not seem to match the product on shelves, so the task of finding a Locking Fuel Cap continued to be a daunting task.
Finally, I received convincing advice from an AutoZone employee that I should buy a Stant Locking Fuel Cap (part number 11509). I did purchase that specific cap and it has worked great with no problems.
The only down side is that there is no practical way to retrofit the plastic cord to the new Locking Fuel Cap. In case I ever wanted to reinstall the original Fuel Cap, I carefully detached the original Fuel Cap from the the cord and tucked the cord in the brace of the Fuel Door as shown above.
