Eyelids

The metal covering the top portion of the headlight shown below, giving it a slightly closed look, is not metal at all.

In fact, it is not stock either.  It is a plastic fabrication (hand laid paintable fiberglass) called an Eyelid and offers the vehicle a slightly different look without interfering with night vision.

At left is the wide eyed look of a stock headlight on a 2005 Tacoma.  Some say the Eyelids give the vehicle a bit of a mean look, but I prefer to feel that it less of a dear-in-the-headlight look and more of an in-control look.  Regardless, it is a subtle change that definitely changes the vehicle's appearance.

I purchased the Eyelids from an eBay Seller ($47 with shipping).  The price is a bit hefty for what you get, but it is not a mass market item and each set needs to be specially made.  The price helps ward off a me-too fad so that the custom look sought after stays with the vehicle over time.

The Eyelids are shipped in a black material (shown above) and must be painted (and preferably Clear Coated) before installation.  I purchased an 11 oz. spray can of Silver Streak Mica ($24.95) and an 11 oz. spray can of Clear Coat ($10.95) from www.ExpressPaint.com.  With shipping the order came to $44.40.  The paint matched perfectly and the Clear Coat helped protect and obtain a shiny surface.

Installation is easy.  Simply peel off the protective paper from the double-sided tape and secure them in place.

UPDATE:

Eight months later, the eyelids looked horrible.  Not only had the paint color turned, but it had worn away from the hard rains and highway airflow.

I spoke to an expert at a collision center who advised me that the paint-yourself-abs plastic parts hold their shape well but rarely can be painted for long term looks.  He said the plastic just doesn't allow colors to adhere to it very long.  He advised me to either have the eyelids fabricated out of metal or purchase Chrome alternatives.

I decided that the expense and hassle to have metal fabricated or to attempt repainting the existing eyelids were not options for me.  So I went shopping online.  I quickly found that Putco offers eyelids for vehicles including my '07 Tacoma, but the prices for for two pieces of plastic are outlandish.  This is one of the better prices I found at eAutoWorks.com.  At $50.88 plus shipping, I have seen it offered for a lot more than that.

After more searching I found that a company called Wellstar Motor Industrial of Taiwan also makes a chromed ABS eyelid for the Tacoma. PartsTrain.com sells it for $47.80 plus shipping.  It was shipped in a master box with the box below inside.

I found that the old eyelid cleaned up rather easily.  As strong as that 3M automotive tape is, it does come off without too much effort.

The new chrome eyelids (below) installed as easily as the first pair did.  I would have preferred the paint color, but even in chrome they make a dramatic improvement while looking for a custom look.
