TranzAlpine Train

On the morning of Monday, March 7, 2005 our APT group enjoyed a trip on what has been voted as one of the top train journeys in the world - the TransAlpine Train.  The trip began in Christchurch, climbed up into the Main Divide an on into the magnificent Southern Alps.

It was one of the few cold days we had while touring New Zealand and it was somewhat rainy, but visibility was still favorable for an enjoyable ride.  The shot at left was taken from an observation car toward the front of the train as it veers left.

It was difficult to take photographs.  The observation car was packed with picture takers who crowded out latecomers.  It appeared that most of the breathtaking shots came up on the right side of the train, but this view appeared on the left side.

Our APT tour manager supplies background information regarding our trip as we got started.  Our group occupied one car on the train.

We caught up with our APT coach at Arthur's Pass.  As usual, our driver managed to find the best parking spot to pick us up.  This shot (right) is of the coach as we emerge from a tunnel that runs under the railroad tracks.
