New Zealand Sea Lions

Sea lions are frequently found along the coasts of New Zealand.  On Sunday, March 6, 2005, our coach stopped in the town of Kaikoura, a popular site seeing destination for whale watching.  Some members of our tour booked an optional Whale Watch opportunity.  As part of the side trip, our coach driver stopped by a spot where sea lions can be enjoyed up close.  The photo above helps reveal how close that might be.  This particular sea lion almost appeared to enjoy a little attention, but he made it very clear when someone got a little too close.  It was wonderful to see such a handsome creature in its own habitat without the constraints places such as a zoo might impose.

Another view of this seemingly friendly fella reveals the incredible oceanscape off in the aquatic distance.

This guy has clearly completed all the calisthenics he plans to do for a while.

A raft of sea lions litter the tops of rocks.

Another raft of sea lions enjoy a swimming bath as others watch or absorb the heat of the sun nearby.
