New Zealand - The Lynx & Cook Strait

The Lynx
is one of a handful of ferries that transport passengers and their vehicles back
and forth between the primary North and South islands of
New Zealand. The
craft large enough to accommodate a lot of vehicles including our coach plus
offer two comfortable decks for seating. A gift shop and bar are also on
board.

At left is a shot of the upper passenger deck of the ferry.
Passengers can purchase sandwiches, drinks and souvenirs while
afloat. A roomy observation deck is at the rear of the ferry.

As we left Wellington Harbor, we enjoyed an interesting new
perspective of landmarks we had seen earlier in the day. Above
is the pier from which we boarded
The Lynx
ferry.
At left is a helicopter that appeared to take interest in our
departure. It followed us out as we left the harbor, then
retreated as we got further out.
In the photograph below and on the left,
St. Gerard's
Monastery is on the side of
Mt. Victoria.

At right, the torrents created by our ferry provide a temporary
marking of our route out of Wellington Harbor.

Above is a visual farewell to our memorable tour of
New Zealand's North
island. Alas, while our hearts might remain with some of those
experiences, we know that new ones await us along
Cook
Strait and
New Zealand's South
island.
At left, the engines pick
up the pace to whisk us away more speedily.

At right, a fellow passenger seemingly is missing the fact that
South island land lies behind him.

 |

 |
Above, we travel past the islands off the tip of the South island of
New Zealand. At
left, we have traveled some distance to get to our port.
|
 |
As we near our destination, we see that there is a lot of recreation
to ride through the wake created of our ferry.
|
 |
Underneath the passenger decks, the vehicles are parked on the
ferry. Our
APT coach is parked at
left. As we arrive to port, we are asked to board the coach
and be prepared to drive off so that we do not hold up other
vehicles behind us.

 |
 |
The image at left was taken after we boarded our coach. Some
vehicles have left the opposite side of the ferry and we await
instructions to disembark.
