Waitomo Glowworm Caves

On Wednesday, March 2, 2005, we were officially on our coach and our APT tour of New Zealand.  About 2.5 hours out of Auckland, we arrived at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves in Waitomo.

Glowworms (Arachnocampa Luminosa) are unique to New Zealand.  They are larvae stage insects that need moist air such as found in a cave.  They drop sticky feeding lines as they hang from the caves walls and emit a light to attract flying insects.

In the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, there are countless numbers of these creatures and in the dark, it resembles an inspiring starlit black night.

The guided tour that our group experienced through the caves featured a view of the caves and an interesting boat ride through caverns lit only by the glowworms.

Below is a scanned image of the brochure that is distributed to promote the attraction.
