For the most part, I'll let the images on this page speak for themselves.

                

                                    

      The above two images are of the entrance of the Homer Tunnel on the only road in to and out from Milford Sound.  Bored through solid rock, construction of the tunnel commenced in 1935 and it took 18 years to complete.  It is 3,000 feet above sea level and it drops about 400 feet in its 1.2 km (3/4 mile) length. The road from the far end of the tunnel to Milford Sound descends another 2,300 feet in 12 miles.
