Today we journey into
New Zealand's highland and Mount Cook National Park, which is
awarded 'World Heritage' status in recognition of its qualities and
rare beauty. The park now forms part of the World Heritage
region of Te Wahipounamu - South West New Zealand. View Mount
Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain at 3754 metres above sea level.
You may wish to take an optional scenic flight over over this
awe-inspiring alpine region (weather permitting, own expense).
Continue to beautiful Lake Tekapo, once an ancient glacier and visit
the picturesque tiny stone Church of the Good Shepherd.
Leaving the High Country we cross the braided Rakaia River and
travel through the mixed cropping and sheep grazing holdings of the
vast Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.
(NOTE: To take advantage of the
beautiful weather on the previous day, our Tour Manager and Coach
Captain took us on to Mt. Cook National Park and a memorable view of
Mt. Cook from The Hermitage Hotel a day earlier. This was
originally planned for today as described above, but we were glad we
moved it up. The weather on this morning was not nearly as
clear.)
