Christchurch, New Zealand

We stayed two nonconsecutive nights in Christchurch.  The first night was on Sunday, March 6, 2005; half way through our trip.  On Sunday, March 13 we revisited the city of once again.

We found that we had a lot more time to enjoy the city of Christchurch on our second visit.  Our trip was almost ended and we had the large part of two days before we needed to go to the Christchurch International Airport.

The photos above, at right and below were taken at Victoria Square Park directly across Colombo Street from the hotel.

A large number of statues honoring the British influence in New Zealand are found throughout Christchurch.  One such statute of Queen Victoria in Victoria Square Park is shown at left.

At right is a statute of Captain James Cook, of the Royal Navy and known to be the first to raise the British flag in New Zealand.

Cathedral Square is one of many focal points in the city of Christchurch.

At right is Christchurch Cathedral.  The spire stands 63 meters high.  It has been damaged by more than one earthquake and has actually toppled by an earthquake in 1888.
