New Zealand - Albatross

On Sunday, March 6, 2005, we selected an optional Whale Watch attraction near Kaikoura.  We were excited to have seen a number of whales on that side trip and we had the opportunity to get close to other aquatic life as well, such as sea lion, dolphins, and the Royal Albatross.

The boats we took on the Whale Watch were state-of-the art and equipped with a large flat LCD screen to display high-resolution computer images and animations of the sights we had just seen or were about to see.  In the image above, the narrator explains that the albatross can fly long distances by allowing half of it's brain to take shifts with the other and sleep while in flight.  The albatross is one of the largest seabirds in the world.

Unfortunately, none of my albatross pictures cam out quite as nicely as I would have liked.  They were so white

on the sunny day that their details became "burned out" in the camera lens.

I salvaged these images, in large part, by reducing their size a great deal and sharpening the image.
