Osprey Lakes Gator Invaders

Trappers set a trap to ensnare large alligators observed in Osprey Lake with a cow lung as bait on May 12.  The bait stayed afloat for quite some time as a school of fish took a particular liking to it.  Later that day, the bait sank beneath the surface of the water.  By the afternoon of Monday, May 15, 2006 the rope left on shore still looked undisturbed.

By late afternoon, the trappers came to check on the status of the trap.  Since it appeared that the trap went unnoticed by its intended prey, they set a new trap.  This time they suspended raw meat using some nearby twigs.  The trap can be seen along the shoreline in the photo at right.

At left is a closer look at the trap set on Monday afternoon.  It suspends raw meat above the surface of the water where the fish cannot reach it.  Once an alligator grabs hold of it, the alligator will naturally swim back out to deeper water stretching the cord attached to the bait.  When the bait is gone and the cord on the shore has been stretched out to the water, it will be a safe bet that an alligator is on the other end for the trappers to pull in.
