Dining & Living Room Window Treatment

At left is an arched Dining Room window and above is the sliding doors from our Living Room to our lanai.

We wanted a special window treatment for the Dining Room.  We felt that a traditional treatment might disguise the unique arched feature.

Eventually we found an arched treatment that impressed us at an Expo store.  When we inquired about it, a salesperson estimated the treatment might cost $1,000 depending on the specific fabrics and options we selected.  We felt that we may be able to make our own or, in the least, find a local company willing to make a similar design for a lot less money.

We were not that intimidated about making our own arched cornice presuming that we could find the fabric that we liked and that we found out how arched cornices are constructed.  But to our surprise, we never found an Internet remedy for this situation and we could not find a fabric that pleased the both of us.

Eventually we decided that perhaps we did need to pay the piper and let the pros take this one over.  Quality fabric is not inexpensive and we didn't want to make a mistake while trying to make this work.  So one afternoon, we called the Expo store thinking that we would arrange for a consultant to come to our home and help us get started.  But when we reached an Expo employee on the phone and identified the treatment that we had interest in, we were now told that it might cost

over $2,000.  The inconsistency didn't sit well for us and the people we spoke to didn't seem to really know that much about their own displays, so we decided to not use Expo again.

We now find ourselves only with a somewhat vague idea of what we want, but with still no solution.  Then, in the next Sunday's newspaper we find an advertisement from Florida Drapery and Wallpaper [(407) 678-4600] located in Winter Springs.  As I often do, I visited their Web Site.  I found a fax number and used it to send an image of what we wanted and solicit a rough quote to have an arched treatment produced to our liking.  Within a short time, Mr. Cecil Kelly responded.  He offered a can do response, a very competitive bid and a willingness to help us produce a treatment even if we purchase a fabric from a different retailer.

We set up an appointment with Mr. Kelly.  He and his staff helped us to find he perfect fabric and he provided a final price that was much more affordable than the weighty numbers thrown out to us by salespeople of the Expo store.  Thinking that we would want a complimentary treatment in the Living Room, we asked for a bid to do both rooms and Mr. Kelly's numbers sounded very fair.

A few weeks later, Florida Drapery and Wallpaper scheduled a time to install the window treatments.  At left is the arched

treatment in the dining room and the Living Room treatment is shown above.

Florida Drapery and Wallpaper provided tie-backs, but we completed the look as shown at right by buying the medallions at either Bed, Bath and Beyond or Linens and Things and the rope and tassel at The Sewing Studio in Maitland, Florida.  The four tassels we purchased were $15 each.  We later found much more price friendly tassels at Ross stores and bought several for the Sitting Room and Guest Room.
