East Room Makeover

July 10, 2005 - July 11, 2005

We refer to one of the rooms in our home as the East room.  Not only is it on the east side of our home, but East is Lynn's maiden name and many objects in this room are in tribute to her side of the family.  At left is the room as it looked when we took possession of the home.

The East Room is designated as Bedroom #3 in the diagram above and is the guest room in our home.  We have some classic contemporary furniture and an elegant queen size bed in this room.  When we originally positioned furniture, we were compelled to place an entertainment armoire on the only wall with a cable connection.  The downside to that decision is that it left only one somewhat awkward position for the bed where it was too close to a wall.

When we finally decided to move furniture to more convenient locations in the room, we were faced with having to install a new cable connection, or live with a long cable running across the room and over the carpet.  We examined the photographs we took of the room at stud stage during construction and we were disappointed to determine that installing a new cable connection to an exterior wall would be more bother than the results would be worth.  Upon further study, we realized that an existing cable connection was located in an adjacent room that shared a wall with the closet of the East Room.

We shopped at Lowe's  for a few cable related connectors and we used a cutout tool to cut into the closet wall opposite the existing cable connector in the other room.  To locate where to cut the hole, we drilled a pilot hole in from the other side first.  Then we used a cardboard template of the low voltage switch box to trace the outline on the drywall.

Inside the wall, we installed a "Y" splitter so that the one original cable would feed the original cable connector in the adjacent room as well as the new connector we were installing.

We then installed two additional cable outlets.  One on a wall in the room and the other on the opposite side in the closet.  In that way, we could connect the cable directly to the wall instead of running the cable to a connector in the closet.

To avoid a bare cable look and shield the cable from damage when we stored items in the closet, we bought a 5 foot cord channel manufactured by Wiremold Company.  The channel was cut down to the lengths we needed to neatly wrap around the inside of the closet wall.  It comes with self adhering adhesive and has, so far, stayed in place quite

well.

The photo above shows how the new cable connection originates in the closet, wraps out of sight to the left and unobtrusively comes through the wall just to the left of the closet door.

We located the border shown above at Poe's Wallpaper For Less in Orlando ( 2212 E Colonial Dr) while shopping for wallpaper for the Sitting Room.  We thought it might look great in the East Room and we were right.

At left is a group of photos on the dresser in this room.  On the wall is an image of my wife's grandfather.

At right is the room as it appears from the hallway door.  We intend to keep an eye out for nostalgic artifacts to place on the plant shelf above the closet.

In September, we finished a project to install a window treatment in this room.  Click HERE for images of that project.
